The debate is a little more significant than you apparently wish to acknowledge.
Current theories of cosmology say that the seeds of galaxies came into existence prior to the formation of the sun, earth-moon system, and other planets of the solar system. This is based on direct observation of other star systems via astronomy and logical inference based on the laws of physics dealing with star formation.
Genesis states quite clearly that the earth was formed first, followed by the rest of the universe. These are words in a book written thousands of years ago and with no identifying author.
I'd say the disparity between Genesis and astronomy goes far beyond the mere perception of astronomers.
BTW, it was "empiricist philosophy" that brought you penicilin and the internet. I would careful about knocking it!
